Alternative gravimetric experiments can be used to find correct formulae. The reaction of magnesium with oxygen from the air gives results good enough to identify the correct formula.

Materials:

Iron powder (0.56 g) Propanone (20 cm3)
1.0 M copper(II) sulfate (15 cm3)
100 cm3 beaker Glass rod
Tripod and gauze Heat proof mat
Bunsen burner Dropping pipette
Funnel and filter paper 100 cm3 conical flask
Oven set at 105 °C Balance with accuracy of at least ± 0.01 g
